Princess was 12.

Zena was 14.

Although there were only two years between them, they were in completely different stages of life.

Princess was still healthy and active.

Zena was a very old lady.

She was completely deaf, and her back legs had become so weak that every step took effort.

From the moment we arrived, she wanted to be wherever we were.

She followed us into the kitchen.

She followed us into the living room.

Even when I came out of the bathroom, she'd be waiting patiently outside the door.

She just wanted to be close and feel safe.

Our bedroom was upstairs.

If we went upstairs to sleep, she'd almost certainly try to follow us.

With her weak back legs, climbing the stairs was difficult enough. Coming back down again, especially in the middle of the night, could be dangerous.

So we made a simple decision.

We moved downstairs.

We ordered two thick yoga mats—one orange and one red—and turned the living room into our bedroom.

As it turned out, we slept surprisingly well.
