When Yen and I left Hong Kong, everything we owned had to fit into two suitcases.

For me, almost one entire suitcase was taken up by a cotton blanket.

If you grew up in Hong Kong in the 1980s, you'll probably know the kind I'm talking about. Thick, heavy, made of pure cotton, and almost impossible to compress.

I had slept under that kind of blanket for as long as I could remember.

There was something about its weight and texture that made me feel safe. It felt like home.

I couldn't imagine leaving Hong Kong without it.

When Yen saw how much space it occupied, he looked at this enormous bundle of cotton and laughed.

"We should call it Elephant."

The name stuck.

From then on, it wasn't just a blanket anymore.

It was Elephant.

Over the next two years, Yen and I moved constantly around the UK through pet sitting.

On average, we stayed in each home for about two weeks before packing up and moving on again.

Every move began the same way.

Open the suitcase.

Take Elephant out.

A couple of weeks later...
